The Nightmare Continues in Real Life – Stay Safe!
Nightmares can be a sign of an underlying psychological issue such as anxiety, PTSD, or depression. Nightmares can also occur as a result of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome. However, most people who suffer from nightmares are not suffering from any mental health condition. Nightmares are simply a symptom of having a sleep disorder.
Nightmares are unpleasant dreams that cause you to wake up in a state of fear. They are typically characterized horrific imagery, sounds and/or frightening situations. The cause of nightmares is often unknown, although it has been linked to stress and anxiety.
There are many ways to prevent or decrease your chances of experiencing nightmares. These include but not limited too:
- getting enough good quality sleep
- avoiding caffeine close to bedtime
- avoiding alcohol close to bedtime
- getting regular exercise
- avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures (e.g., heat waves) in the summer months
I can admit two are reasons behind mine current battle with these terrors. A tragic event would be the other reason. The nightmare continues in real life when the same issues present themselves in reality.
